England's Raheem Sterling quits World Cup after intruders break into family home

(CNN) — English soccer star Raheem Sterling returned home from the World Cup in Qatar after armed intruders broke into his home while his family was inside, a person with knowledge of the situation told CNN.

The incident happened on Saturday night, the person told CNN, and Sterling is said to be “shaken” and “concerned” for the well-being of his children after the burglary.

There would be an opportunity for Sterling to return to Qatar if the circumstances were right, the individual told CNN, but added that “right now he is focused on being home and to support his family”.

England will face France in the quarter-finals of the World Cup on Saturday November 10.

In a statement sent to CNN, Surrey Police said they are currently investigating a report of a burglary at an address in Oxshott, Leatherhead.

“Police were contacted just before 9 p.m. on Saturday December 3 after the occupants of the property arrived at their home to find that various items, including jewelry and watches, had been stolen from them,” a spokesperson said. from Surrey Police to CNN.

“Inquiries to establish the circumstances are ongoing and the investigation is ongoing. There was no threat of violence as the objects were discovered after the fact. Investigations into the circumstances are ongoing.”

Sterling sat out of England’s 3-0 win over Senegal on Sunday and England manager Gareth Southgate later said the 27-year-old was dealing with a “family affair”.

“I spent a lot of time with Raheem this morning,” Southgate told reporters on Sunday.

“You have days when things happen and you have to deal with them. He’s on his way back. Obviously we’re concerned about respecting his space and his privacy, so we don’t want to go into too much detail.”

“Of course it’s not ideal for the group before a big game, but it pales, the individual is more important than the group in those times.”

CNN has contacted the English Football Association for comment.

The Chelsea striker has played in England’s first two World Cup group stage matches, scoring in the team’s 6-2 win over Iran.
